Sandra’s research involves the surface modification of Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs) with polymer chains to fabricate new solid-state materials with unique properties. Her ongoing research focuses on the synthesis and investigation of one-component nanocomposites based on polymer-decorated “hairy” CNCs. By generating high molecular weight polymers covalently linked to CNCs, lightweight materials combining high strength, stiffness and toughness will be fabricated.
