Self-assembly of lipidic lyotropic liquid crystals for photonic dimensions

Reveal the self-assembly process of photonic crystals in nature and their bio-inspired fabrication

In this project, we develop photonic structures bio-inspired by nature through the self-assembly of lipidic lyotropic liquid crystals. We investigate how we can boost the unit cell sizes of the three-dimensional networks to photonic dimensions in the order of several hundreds of nanometers. The aim is to develop photonic pigments that can be used in the food or cosmetics industry and are completely biodegradable and non-toxic.
