Hybrid materials obtained combining the self-assembly of block copolymers and inorganic nanostructures

The combination of block copolymer structures obtained via self-assembly and inorganic nanostructures (e.g., plasmonic and oxide nanoparticles) offers many possibilities in terms of developing novel, functional materials. Using high-refractive index additives such as titania and zinc oxide nanoparticles allows more efficient photonic structures, whereas the addition of plasmonic nanoparticles can unlock completely new features. These hybrid materials can be either prepared with a single-step procedure (i.e., co-assembly) or directly in-situ. Interestingly, the location of the inorganic nanostructures within the polymer matrix can be finely controlled by tuning both enthalpic and entropic contributions.
