Nanoparticles for Wood Preservation
Nanoparticles are promising wood protecting agents. We investigate key parameters to improve their impregnation behavior in wood.
Pressure treatment of wood is an industrial process used to protect wood from insects and fungi. The most commonly used wood preservatives are copper-based or triazole derivatives (as a non-metallic alternative). A common problem with preservatives is leaching, which leads to soil-contamination and loss of the preservative effect. Nanoparticles offer an interesting alternative to improve retainment of the preservative in the wood structure. The goal of this project is to understand the process of impregnation of nanoparticles in wood and to find new wood preservatives.
